Understanding Number 3 and the Word Three
The number 3 represents three items. Its number word is “three”. It comes after 2 and before 4, so 2 is its predecessor and 4 is its successor.
Build a Three-Object Pattern
Choose three objects in two colours, such as two red blocks and one blue block.
- Arrange the objects in a row and count them from left to right.
- Change their order and count again to show that the total remains three.
- Tap three times, then point to the numeral 3 and say “three”.
Add one more object to make 4, then remove it to return to 3. This reinforces the successor as well as the target quantity.
How to Form Number 3
Start near the top and make a small curve towards the right. Without lifting the pencil, continue into a second rounded curve and finish on the writing line.
A Common Writing Difficulty
The two curves can become a backward 3 or an uneven shape. Encourage two right-facing curves with the middle point kept close to the centre.
