How to Choose and Use a Worksheet

Choose an activity that matches the skill a child is learning now rather than selecting a worksheet only by age. A child who is beginning to notice letters may start with one familiar letter, while a confident counter may be ready to trace and count a larger number. Fruit and bird activities are useful when children enjoy learning through pictures and topic words.

Before writing, look at the worksheet together and read its instructions aloud. Demonstrate the first example, then let the child continue with as much independence as possible. Keep practice short and positive, praise careful effort, and stop if the child becomes tired. Worksheets work best alongside conversation, stories, counting objects and hands-on play.

  1. Choose one goal Focus on letter formation, number writing, counting or vocabulary.
  2. Practise together Say the letter, number or picture word before tracing begins.
  3. Review the learning Ask the child to explain or demonstrate what they practised.
