Understanding Number 2 and the Word Two
The number 2 represents two items. Its number word is “two”. It comes after 1 and before 3, so 1 is its predecessor and 3 is its successor.
Make Pairs Around the Room
Collect two matching or related objects, such as two socks, two crayons or two toy animals.
- Touch each object once while counting “one, two”.
- Separate the pair, bring it together again and confirm that there are still two.
- Make a second pair with different objects and place a numeral 2 beside it.
Ask what would remain if one object were removed. This connects 2 to its predecessor, 1.
How to Form Number 2
Start near the top, curve forwards and around, move diagonally down towards the left, then finish with a short line across the bottom.
A Common Writing Difficulty
Number 2 is often reversed. Keep the model visible and remind the child that the top curve moves towards the right before the diagonal returns to the left.
