Ask your child to count 21 objects on the worksheet, say the number word "twenty-one" aloud, then trace the number before writing it independently on the practice lines.
Understanding 21: Two Tens and One One
The number 21 is made from 20 and 1. The digit 2 represents two complete groups of ten, while the digit 1 represents one extra object. Build two rows of ten counters and place one more counter beside them to make the quantity visible.
Count the two rows to reach 20, then count on one more to reach 21. This shows that 21 comes immediately after 20 and is one less than 22.
Make 21 in Three Groups of Seven
Use 21 building blocks, crayons or large counters. Adults should supervise whenever small counting objects are used.
- Count out seven objects and place them in the first row.
- Make a second row of seven objects.
- Make a third row of seven objects.
- Count across all three rows to confirm there are 21 objects.
- Move one object away and notice that 20 objects remain.

How to Write Number 21 Clearly
Write the digit 2 first: begin near the top, curve around, move diagonally down and finish across the bottom. Write a straight downward stroke for 1 immediately afterwards.
Remind children that the 2 comes before the 1. Reversing the order makes 12, which is a different number. Keep both digits the same height and resting on the same writing line.
