Counting Activity

Ask your child to count 20 objects on the worksheet, say the number word "twenty" aloud, then trace the number before writing it independently on the practice lines.

Understanding 20: Two Tens and Zero Ones

The number 20 represents twenty items and its number word is “twenty”. It comes after 19 and before 21. The digit 2 shows two complete tens, while 0 shows that there are no extra ones.

Build Two Complete Tens

Use twenty counters with two ten-frames or make two bundles of ten craft sticks.

  1. Fill or bundle the first group of ten.
  2. Make a second complete group of ten.
  3. Point to each group while counting by tens: 10, 20.

Remove one item to make 19, then replace it and add one loose item to introduce 21.

How to Write Number 20

Write 2 first by curving from the top, sliding diagonally down and finishing across. Add a closed oval-shaped 0 to its right.

A Common Writing Difficulty

Leaving out 0 changes the numeral to 2, while reversing the digits produces 02. Link each digit to its place: two tens and zero ones.

Teaching Tip and Independent Practice

Teaching tip: Keep the two full groups of ten visible while the child writes 20.

Independent practice: Build two tens, hide the numeral model and write 20 before counting the groups again.
