Understanding Number 1 and the Word One
The number 1 represents one item. Its number word is “one”. It comes after 0 and before 2, so 0 is its predecessor and 2 is its successor.
Find One Special Object
Ask your child to choose one safe object, such as one toy car, one spoon or one building block.
- Place the object on the table and say, “There is one object.”
- Move it into a small box, then take it out and count it again.
- Hold up one finger before tracing the numeral and saying “one”.
Repeat with a different object so the child learns that 1 describes the quantity, not a particular kind of object.
How to Form Number 1
Begin at the top and draw one straight line down to the writing line. Follow the worksheet’s example consistently and use a slow downward movement.
A Common Writing Difficulty
Children may curve the stroke or continue below the writing line. Mark the starting point and ask them to stop when the pencil reaches the bottom line.
