Understanding 10: One Ten and Zero Ones
The number 10 represents ten items and its number word is “ten”. It comes after 9 and before 11. The digit 1 shows one complete group of ten, while 0 shows that no extra ones remain.
Fill a Ten Frame
Draw two rows of five boxes and collect ten counters.
- Fill the top row from left to right with five counters.
- Fill the second row with five more.
- Count the full frame by ones, then recognise it as one group of ten.
Remove one counter to show 9, then replace it and add one counter outside the frame to show 11.
How to Write Number 10
Write 1 first with a downward stroke, then place a closed oval-shaped 0 immediately to its right. Keep both digits the same height and on the same line.
A Common Writing Difficulty
Reversing the digit order produces 01 rather than the usual way of writing ten. Point out that the 1 must come before the 0.
