Counting Activity
Ask your child to count 6 objects on the worksheet, say the number word "six" aloud, then trace the number before writing it independently on the practice lines.
Understanding Number 6 and the Word Six
The number 6 represents six items. Its number word is “six”. It comes after 5 and before 7, so 5 is its predecessor and 7 is its successor. Six can also be seen as two equal groups of three.
Make Two Groups of Three
Collect six blocks, crayons or other safe objects and divide them between two spaces.
- Count three objects into the first group.
- Count another three into the second group.
- Join the groups and count all six objects once more.
Remove one object to make 5, then return it and add one more to compare 6 with 7.
How to Form Number 6
Start near the top, curve down towards the left and continue around to make the rounded lower part. Finish by bringing the stroke inward without adding a separate circle.
A Common Writing Difficulty
Children may reverse 6 or leave its lower loop open. Keep the starting point visible and practise one continuous anticlockwise movement.
Teaching Tip and Independent Practice
Teaching tip: Trace a large 6 in the air while saying “curve down and round”.
