Understanding 30: Three Tens and Zero Ones
The number 30 is made from three complete tens and no extra ones. Arrange objects in three rows of ten so children can see why the digit 3 appears in the tens place.
The zero is important because it shows there are no loose ones after the three tens. Without the zero, the written number would be 3 rather than 30.
Fill Three Groups of Ten
Use 30 safe objects and three containers, hoops or marked spaces to represent the tens.
- Count ten objects into the first group.
- Count ten more into the second group.
- Fill the third group with another ten objects.
- Count by tens as you point to the groups: 10, 20, 30.
- Remove one object to make 29, then return it to complete 30.

How to Write Number 30 Clearly
